Applications are invited for the Cartier Women’s Initiative - Science & Technology Pioneer Award. This new award is especially dedicated to recognizing women impact entrepreneurs at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation. Open to women entrepreneurs from any country and sector, this award will highlight disruptive solutions built around unique, protected, or hard-to-reproduce technological or scientific advances that require heavy R&D, a long commercialization cycle, high capital intensity, technology risk, and complexity. The Cartier Women's Initiative is an annual international entrepreneurship program that aims to drive change by empowering women to impact entrepreneurs. The program is open to women-run and women-owned businesses from any country and sector that aim to have a strong and sustainable social and/or environmental impact. The Science & Technology Pioneer Award was created to recognize and support women deep tech impact entrepreneurs who are building businesses in male-dominated sectors and serve as inspirational role models for women in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields. Eligibility

To be considered for the Science & Technology Pioneer Award, the applicant’s business must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Technological & scientific innovation: The business should be based on the development of a new technology, a complex engineering process, or a scientific discovery, and not only on a disruptive business model. Development of the technology and product, from idea to commercialization should take at least 2 years.
  2. For-profit: The business should be designed to generate sufficient revenues to support its operations and return some level of profit to its owners. Non-profit enterprises are not accepted.
  3. Early-stage: The business should be in the initial phase of its development or growth. It must have at least a proof of concept, a prototype, or be in the process of producing one and must not be commercializing its final product/service for more than 6 years.
  4. Impact: The business should demonstrate the potential to have a strong impact on its industry. It should meet at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly. The SDGs are a call for action by all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the environment. They cover a series of social, economic, and environmental development issues.
  5. Leadership: A woman must fill the main leadership position, for example as CEO, General Manager, or Director of the company.
  6. Ownership: The founder needs to be a woman and she must be the largest shareholder of founder equity in the company or own a share at least equal to that of her cofounder(s).
  7. Legal entry age: The lead entrant must be 18 on the day of the application deadline.
  8. English proficiency: A good command of the English language is required (both verbal and written). This level requires an understanding of the main ideas of complex text, technical discussion in business and your field of specialization, and an ability to interact with fluency and spontaneity with native speakers. ​​​​​​​
  9. Time commitment: The candidate must commit to dedicating up to 4 hours/week virtually for the duration of the fellowship program and to attending one week of in-person preparatory training (date TBC).

Award & availability

Stated amount: 8,395,600 The three fellows will receive: FINANCIAL CAPITAL SUPPORT

  1. A US $ 100,000 (Rs. 83,95,600) grant for each first-place awardee.
  2. A US $ 60,000 (Rs. 50,37,180) grant for each second-place awardee.
  3. A US $ 30,000 (Rs. 25,18,725) grant for each third-place awardee. HUMAN CAPITAL SUPPORT Our fellowship program is part of the human capital support we offer our fellows. It focuses on several key areas of human capital support for women-impact entrepreneurs and offers a combination of training and collective workshops.
  4. Training in specific business areas.
  5. Advice sessions with subject matter experts in the CWI Community.
  6. Community peer learning and networking sessions.
  7. Online and in-person leadership communications and media training workshops.
  8. In-person INSEAD Women Impact Entrepreneurship Program.
  9. Leadership capacity executive coaching by The Women’s Impact Alliance (formerly The Coaching Fellowship). SOCIAL CAPITAL SUPPORT Throughout the program, we strive to highlight the social and environmental impact created by our fellows and bridge connections between women impact entrepreneurs and their supporters.
  10. International exposure and media visibility.
  11. Access to an online and offline community of 700+ experts and peers.
  12. Ongoing support for the development of the fellows’ businesses. The jury selects and ranks the top three applicants who become our fellows.

Application

  3. Your pitch deck: we are not looking for a specific format, just submit an existing pitch deck that accurately describes the impact of your business. This can be an investor presentation or a product presentation.
  4. A one-minute video of yourself in which you answer the following questions: What is your motivation behind solving the problem that you have identified? What is the impact you wish to create through your solution? What do you wish to gain/contribute to the Cartier Women’s Initiative community? Selection process

  1. The selection process includes shortlisting, in-depth due diligence on the top five applicants in each region, and presentation before the jury.
  2. The jury selects and ranks the top three applicants who become our fellows. The announcement of the ranking takes place during the Awards Ceremony. Other Info Embedded positive impact

  5. Magnitude: Is there a significant (number of people: local to global) and/or (degree of change: marginal to transformational) impact?
  6. Measurement: Is the business tracking and managing to optimize impact?
  7. Impact potential: Is the impact potential and/or realized? Technological innovation
  8. Disruption: Is the solution built around unique, protected, or hard-to-reproduce technological or scientific advances?
  9. Sophistication: Does the business leverage a solid research base that requires a mix of advanced skills, knowledge, and infrastructure?
  10. Enabling technologies: Does the business improve products or services and create new markets to solve major societal and environmental issues? Business model sustainability and validated development plan
  11. Financial sustainability: Does the business have sufficient financial return potential to allow for strategic growth?
  12. Well thought-out: Are expectations (sales cycles, price setting, etc) and models well thought out and defensible?
  13. Growth strategy: Does the business have an expansion plan with clear business and impact goals and resource requirements (people, capital other)?
  14. Risk assessment: Has the business thoroughly evaluated risks and capabilities?
  15. Monitoring systems: Is the business working to set up dynamic mechanisms to monitor execution? Market and access strategy
  16. Unmet need: Has the business identified a large, unmet need in a growing industry (requiring a reasonable level of behavior change)?
  17. Competitive advantage: Does the business have clear, long-term, defensible competitive advantage?
  18. Market share: Could the business secure a big share in the market (#1 or #2)?
  19. Validation and product-market fit: Does the business have evidence of (potential) customer validation and (potential) product-market fit? Team
  20. Complementarity: Is the team diverse, with 2-4 members who complement each other?
  21. Technical skill: Does the team have relevant technical/leadership skills and experience?
  22. Track record: Does the team have a track record of execution and/or significant achievement?
  23. Network: Does the team have relevant networks and advisors? Leadership character of the applicant
  24. Entrepreneurial spirit: Does the applicant display integrity, motivation and high energy, entrepreneurial approach?
