MELBOURNE LAW SCHOOL INDIAN EQUALITY LAW PHD SCHOLARSHIP

1. Applications are invited from suitably qualified scholars for a PhD scholarship at Melbourne Law School (MLS) on any aspect of Indian equality or anti-discrimination law. Comparative law research proposals are welcome, provided they have a significant Indian law dimension. The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by Associate Professor Tarunabh Khaitan. Funding for the scholarship is provided by Melbourne Law School and the Letten Prize was awarded to Associate Professor Khaitan. Facilitation of co-supervision from non-law disciplines will be considered for interdisciplinary proposals. 2. The successful candidate will also receive automatic entry into the Melbourne Social Equity Institute’s Doctoral Academy. 3. Applications from traditionally under-represented groups in legal academies are especially welcome. Eligibility

Eligible applicants must:

  1. Must meet the general eligibility requirements including English language requirements for undertaking a PhD at MLS.
  2. Have completed at least a four-year Australian Bachelor's degree or overseas equivalent and achieved an overall average of greater than 75% in the final year of the degree.
  3. Have completed a research project/component that accounts for at least 25% of their year's work at 4th-year undergraduate or masters level.
  4. Demonstrate current knowledge of the discipline in which they plan to undertake their research higher degree through relevant work and/or research experience (where applicable).
  5. Contact two academic referees. If you have prior professional and/or research experience, please provide employer referee/s for each position held. Your referees will be required to provide information about your academic ability and judgement of your research potential.
  6. Be available to undertake research full-time in Melbourne.
  7. Have not completed a PhD previously.
  8. Be able to commence their PhD in February.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 1,985,940

  1. Full tuition fee offset for the duration of the PhD.
  2. Annual stipend (living allowance) — historically around AUD 30,600 per year (indexed annually). Relocation allowance:
  3. AUD 2,000 for candidates moving from outside the state of Victoria
  4. AUD 3,000 for candidates moving from outside Australia.
  5. Eligibility to apply for project funding (for travel, fieldwork, conferences).

  2. After evaluation, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for the scholarship.
  3. Shortlisting of candidates will be done by authorities. Other Info The Indian Equality Programme was established by Associate Professor Tarun Khaitan in late 2018. It is funded by the Letten Prize, and encourages capacity-building to support early academics with an interest in Indian equality, anti-discrimination law and/or comparative law.
