HEINRICH BOLL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1, 500 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunst-/Musikhochschulen’). We expect our scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self-determination, and justice. Please note: We only accept online applications; written proof of German language proficiency (Minimum requirement: „Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang“ Level DSH 2 or „TestDaF“ Level B2) is necessary Notably, the foundation awards scholarships as per the guidelines set by the Foreign Office and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Eligibility

When choosing our scholarship recipients, we aim to combine the principle of high achievement with that of equal opportunities. The Heinrich Böll Foundation gives special (but not exclusive) consideration to:

  1. International graduate and doctoral students from central and eastern Europe,the EU’s neighbouring states, the CIS, the Middle East, North Africa, transition and newly industrialised countries, and conflict regions worldwide.
  2. Women (particularly studying STEM).
  3. Students in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), especially those focusing on environmental science, ecology, etc.
  4. Economics and legal studies; art studies; and journalism (see also scholarship programme «Medienvielfalt, anders»).
  5. Members of ethnic minorities; refugees. Award & availability

Stated amount: Not Available The Heinrich Böll Foundation supports young people through scholarship funding (generally including a maintenance grant, study and research grant, foreign study grant, mobility allowance, family allowance, and other categories). In addition, we promote the scholarship recipients in their personal development, help them to gain cross-disciplinary qualifications and enhance their key competencies, encourage political debate and attention to social issues, and nurture interdisciplinary dialogue. In particular, we support the scholarship recipients in taking their own initiatives and organizing their own work and give them a wide range of opportunities to participate in decision-making. We offer:

  1. A program of events including a summer academy («Campus») a. Specialised events in the field of political and civic education. b. Workshops to enhance key skills; gender and diversity training courses. c. Study groups for scholarship recipients, ad hoc meetings, and university groups. d. Networking meetings for alumni.
  2. Individual consultations: On academic planning and career orientation.
  3. Green Network The mentoring and coaching programme “Grün vernetzt” offers networking opportunities, contacts with alumni and volunteers in and around the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and help in finding internships in the Foundation’s offices around the world. Scholarships for PhD students The scholarship department grants scholarships to doctoral students from all disciplines. We are particularly interested in supporting research projects related to focus areas of the work of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Central to the nonmaterial promotion for PhD students are:
  4. PhD scholar forum with science policy or higher education.
  5. Policy theme and presentations of research projects.
  6. Workshops (e.g. writing training, time management, etc.).
  7. Seminars on career orientation.

Application

No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the grants, it will be automatically considered, once you enrolled for the program. The Heinrich Boll Foundation only accepts online applications. The online portal opens around six weeks prior to the deadline for applying. To apply for the scholarship:

  1. Access the form from the foundation’s online portal.
  2. Fill the form completely and correctly.
  3. Attach the required documents in PDF format to the online application.
  4. Submit the completed application and all the necessary documents before the deadline.

Selection process

The selection process for granting the scholarship comprises three stages: Stage 1: Submission of written application along with the required documents that include an expert reference from a school teacher or a university lecturer and a personal reference on the applicant’s social commitment. Each application is reviewed based on the applicant’s academic record, his/her political interest, and social commitment, the reason for applying for the scholarship and the quality of research project (in case of doctoral students). Stage 2: After the application has been assessed, an hour-long interview is held with a liaison lecturer usually at the applicant’s university or near his/her residence. The interview can also be telephonic. After the interview, a report written by the liaison lecturer is attached to the application. Stage 3: Suitable applicants will have to attend a selection workshop held in Berlin that consists of a group discussion and personal interview. Only a few applicants are selected at the end of each stage. The decision taken at the selection procedure’s each stage is communicated to the applicants in writing. Students may reapply if they could not clear the first or the second stage. However, applicants who have participated in the selection workshop and were rejected are not allowed to reapply.   1. The complete application – i.e. all application documents including (possibly separately submitted) expert and personal references – must be submitted by the 1st March or 1st September. Only then can the application be deemed complete and ready for processing. We kindly ask for understanding that incomplete applications cannot be processed. If your application documents are not complete, we will let you know and inform you about the next application date.
  2. References sent to the Heinrich Böll Foundation by the referees directly must also reach us by the respective application deadline.
  3. Personal and expert references by university lecturers must contain the referee’s original signature. This does not apply in case the referee sends the document directly to the Heinrich Böll Foundation by e-mail.
  4. All documents have to be provided in German (we also accept personal and expert references in English) On data protection: When you submit your application, your personal details will be saved electronically and later deleted in accordance with statutory data protection requirements. If your application is rejected:
