FULBRIGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING ASSISTANT PROGRAM (FLTA)

The Fulbright FLTA Program, an integral part of the Fulbright Student Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State, is a nine-month, non-degree program for early career English teachers teaching at the college level or professionals in related fields. The program invites applications from early-career English teachers teaching at the college level or training to become a teacher of English, or a young professional in related fields (e.g., American Studies, American/English Literature, etc.). During their nine-month grant, selected FLTAs from India will teach Hindi or Urdu at select U.S. campuses. To promote cross-cultural understanding in the U.S. and the FLTA fellows' home countries. Fulbright FLTA participants can refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the United States while being teaching assistants for their native language to U.S. students and strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities. The participants also interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects. Eligibility

In addition to the General Prerequisites, the applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Be citizens of India. Applicants must be residing in India throughout the application, nomination, and selection process.
  2. Must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism.
  3. Fluency in English is mandatory. A score of no less than 79-80 on the internet-based TOEFL is required. TOEFL scores are not required at the time of application. Candidates recommended by the selection committee will have to appear for the TOEFL. USIEF will provide fee vouchers for the TOEFL exam.
  4. Indian applicants must have at least a master’s degree with a good academic record. The master’s degree should be in fields such as English language, English/American Literature, American Studies, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, and related areas.
  5. A young teacher of English at the college level or training to become a teacher of English or is a young professional in a related field.
  6. Prior teaching experience is preferred. Important: The FLTA Program is a NON-DEGREE and non-renewable program and those wishing to pursue degree studies in the United States should not apply. All FLTA fellows must return to their home countries upon completion of the nine-month program. No extension requests will be supported. No dependents are allowed to accompany fellows in this program. Material misinterpretation (e.g. plagiarism) at any time during the application or grant period is grounds for selection withdrawal or grant termination, as well as ineligibility for future participation.

Selection process

  1. Preference will be given to candidates who have little or no prior experience living in the United States. Fellows must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically diverse U.S. academic institutions. After the program, Indian fellows will be expected to return to India, making an immediate impact by utilizing the skills gained and sharing the experiences gleaned from their time in the U.S.
  2. Applications of recommended candidates will be forwarded to the U.S. for further review. The final selection is dependent on the ability to match requests of U.S. host institution with language skills of the candidates. Other Info Some Important Points
  3. If selected for participation in the Fulbright FLTA Program, you will have the opportunity to spend one academic year sharing your culture and language with American students by supporting an existing language program or helping to establish a new one on a U.S. university or college campus.
  4. FLTA duties vary widely from institution to institution – some FLTAs are expected to teach language courses on their own with minimal in-class supervision, while others may be much more involved in extracurricular support of established language programs such as leading conversation groups, participating in community events or lectures, working in language laboratories, or contributing to language materials development.
  5. In addition to duties as a teaching assistant, all FLTAs are required to participate in coursework.
  6. This provides an opportunity to increase your understanding of topics related to your personal and professional goals, increase your English proficiency, as well as allow you the opportunity to benefit from the cultural exchange inherent in sharing ideas with American students within a classroom setting.
  7. The Fulbright FLTA grant is one academic year (approximately 9-10 months) non-renewable opportunity.
  8. As a Fulbright FLTA, you would be able to engage in a meaningful cultural exchange opportunity on a U.S. university or college campus, while at the same time deepening your pedagogical skills, increasing your English proficiency, and promoting mutual understanding through engaging with American students and getting involved in local communities.
  9. After your program, you will be expected to return to your home community, making an immediate impact by utilizing the skills gained and sharing the experiences gleaned from your time in the U.S. Role of FLTA FLTAs spend one academic year at a U.S. college or university. They:

  14. Engage in academic study that will enrich their postgraduate studies and enhance their professional development.
