FISHERIES NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARSHIPS

Fisheries New Zealand in collaboration with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) offers scholarships to both Master's and undergraduate students in the fields of fisheries science and marine biology. In collaboration with NIWA, Fisheries New Zealand is offering master's scholarships for the next academic year. The scholarships were first established in 2006 to allow graduate students to develop expertise in quantitative fisheries science in New Zealand. The research undertaken will contribute to quantitative fisheries research programmes with particular emphasis on models for assessing the status of fish stocks or models for assessing marine ecosystems. Fisheries New Zealand wishes to develop these areas of research, as there is a shortage of trained quantitative graduates in New Zealand to undertake research and contribute to the sustainable use of fisheries. Masters Scholarships in Quantitative Fisheries Science 1. Scholarships are available for Masters Students in the field of quantitative marine science, particularly stock assessment modeling or ecosystem modeling. 2. We encourage you to apply if you have a major or minor in mathematics, statistics, computing, or biology. Applicants with a strong quantitative (particularly applied statistics) or computer programming background, combined with marine biology, will be favoured. Undergraduate Scholarships in Quantitative Marine Biology Scholarships are available for undergraduate students interested in an Honors year or doing a double-major in: 1. Biology or marine biology. 2. Mathematics, computing, or statistics. Applications with a strong quantitative background (such as statistics) will be favored. The decision of the Committee will be final and no discussion will be entered into. In Stage 2 candidates will be assessed upon their academic achievement and other relevant skills and experience. Priority will be given to those candidates with an interest in applied statistics (preferably in combination with marine biology) and a background in mathematics, statistics, or computing. In Stage 2 candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:

  1. Academic achievement
  2. Choice of papers if taught year funded or papers taken if funding is for thesis year only
  3. Suitability of supervisor (university) and co-supervisor (NIWA or Fisheries New Zealand)
  4. Feasibility and applicability of proposed research
  5. Relevant skills and experience (with an emphasis on quantitative skills) Other Info
  6. Science is fundamental to the management of our important marine environment. To keep our marine environment healthy into the future we will need more, and different science to what we have today.
  7. With this in mind, we are excited to invite applications for the joint Fisheries New Zealand and National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) Masters scholarships, and Fisheries New Zealand undergraduate scholarships.
  8. Head of Fisheries New Zealand Dan Bolger says while we have the challenges of climate change and increasing use of the marine environment ahead of us, we will also have access to far greater volumes of data, and we will be getting it faster.
  9. "We are investing in the next generation of fisheries scientists, so our people will be equipped to deal with the changing world and will have the tools to process the increasing volume of information," Mr Bolger says.
  10. "The scholarships are also an opportunity to encourage students to research and study in areas such as marine biology and statistics which currently have a shortage of trained graduates.
  11. "There is a real shortage of graduates with quantitative skills. New Zealand needs graduates with these skills to conduct research and contribute to the sustainable use of marine resources. These skills are also invaluable for students wishing to pursue a career in related fields.
  12. "These scholarships will allow students to further develop their biological expertise, quantitative skills, and programming abilities in either their post-graduate or undergraduate studies.
  13. "As part of the Master's scholarship, winners will carry out research with NIWA and/or Fisheries New Zealand scientists as mentors, which will be a fantastic, real-world experience for students," says Mr Bolger.
  14. The scholarships are available to master and undergraduate students who are interested in developing strong skills within New Zealand in marine biology and applied statistics, mathematics, or programming. The objectives of Fisheries New Zealand/NIWA Graduate Scholarships in Quantitative Fisheries Science are:
  15. To attract New Zealand students into quantitative marine science.
  16. To promote and encourage excellence in quantitative fisheries research.
  17. To encourage master's students to contribute to priority fisheries research areas identified by the New Zealand Government.
  18. To provide opportunities for students to carry out research with NIWA and/or Fisheries New Zealand scientists in established and new quantitative fisheries research programs.
  19. To train students at the masters level by sharing and using the combined expertise of university academics, Fisheries New Zealand, and practicing NIWA scientists.
  20. To facilitate the professional development of master's students through exposure to an applied commercial research environment.
