Eligibility

The Non-Resident Fellowship is open to applicants 18 years of age or older who meet the following conditions.

  1. Meet all submission deadlines and submit the application in English.
  2. Commit to spend 18 months undertaking a project addressing one of two topical tracks: Digital Civil Society, or Race and Technology.
  3. Commit to contribute a final written report, video or audio interview.
  4. Commit to virtual attendance at fellowship kick-off sessions.
  5. Commit to attend a week-long convening of the fellowship cohort, (maybe virtual or in-person at Stanford depending on COVID restrictions).
  6. This week involves presentations by fellows on their project progress, and opportunities to meet other communities at Stanford. Fellows are encouraged to engage with and imagine/identify additional collective activities for their cohort

Award & availability

Stated amount: 1,650,750 All fellows will receive:

  1. A $20,000 (16,50,750 Rupees) stipend, paid at the beginning of the fellowship, to support work on an 18-month project.
  2. Time to present as part of a “kick off” session where they can develop their project plan with members.
  3. A week-long convening (which may be virtual or in-person at the Stanford campus, depending on COVID-related restrictions).
  4. Project support up to $5,000 (4,12,781 Rupees) to support additional project-related expenses as appropriate.
  5. Mentorship from fellowship directors and access to fellowship alumni from previous cohorts.
  6. Access to research staff to develop and extend their projects.

  1. Does the project address a question or challenge that is broadly relevant across civil society?
  2. Will the project contribute significant new knowledge or create substantial positive change?
  3. Does the Fellow demonstrate a deep understanding of the issue their project addresses?
  4. Will the Fellow and the project benefit from engagement with an academic research community?
  5. Does the Fellow actively participate in networks and partnerships that will support the success of the project? Is there a clear sense of the intended users or beneficiaries and how they will be able to apply the project’s outcomes? Quality of project proposal
  6. Is the project plan thoughtful and well-articulated?
  7. Have potential risks and challenges received adequate consideration?
  8. Are goals, timelines, and deliverables realistic?
  9. Has the applicant identified partnerships and resources that will catalyze the project? Other Info The Practitioner Fellowships at the Digital Civil Society Lab (DCSL) supported civil society practitioners working to address racial, gender, class/caste, sexuality, and economic inequality in relation to technology.
