CHARLES WALLACE FELLOWSHIP IN SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY

Applications for the Charles Wallace Fellowship are invited from Indian social anthropologists or sociologists with proven records of excellence in both research and international publication. The Charles Wallace Fellowships are funded by the Charles Wallace India Trust and administered in India by the British Council. They are intended for Indian academic or professional social anthropologists or sociologists in their 30s or early 40s who would benefit from a period of study in a British university whilst contributing to the life and work of the host institution. The Fellowship at Queen’s University is tenable for three months. As well as pursuing their studies, using the facilities available at Queen’s University, the Fellow may be asked to participate in seminars or give a few lectures. They may also pay short visits to other UK universities. The Fellow will be expected to submit a short report on their activities to the Trustees towards the end of their visit. Eligibility

  1. Indian academic or professional social anthropologists or sociologists are eligible to apply.
  2. They must be in their 30s or early 40s to be eligible.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 534,960

  1. The total value of the Fellowship is approximately Rs. 5,34,960 (£5000) [ Rs. 4,27,968 (£4000) contributed by the Charles Wallace Trust and Rs. 1,06,922 (£1000) by Queen’s University Belfast ].
  2. National and international travel and a monthly stipend of about Rs. 1,28,390 (£1200).

Selection process

  1. The selection is made by Anthropology in consultation with the Trustees’ representative in London who will write to the successful applicant confirming the terms of the Fellowship. This letter can then be used by the Fellow as official support for a visa application. Otherwise, most correspondence takes place between the applicants/Fellows and the Anthropology office.
  2. To maximize the benefit gained from the Fellowship, both for the Fellow and Anthropology, preference may be given to applicants whose research interests fall within the following areas, all of which are specialisms within the School: ethnic conflict, international borders, environmental anthropology, anthropology of performance, anthropology of art, human rights, emotions, and medical anthropology.
