Each year, more than $2 million dollars in university graduate fellowships are offered to full-time master’s and PhD students to recognize and support academic excellence. The fellowships are offered to students who have demonstrated superior intellectual ability and academic accomplishment.

Eligibility

Students must have a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 to be considered for this award. To hold an award: A. Have been admitted to a graduate program at the University of Manitoba as a Master’s or Ph.D. student. Pre-master’s and Occasional students are not eligible. B. Not have an active, admission‐related hold on their student account during their provisional admission period. C. Be registered full‐time in a graduate program of study in the unit that recommends them for a UMGF, if they hold a UMGF award. D. Application

No Application Fee Please consult your department or unit for the UMGF application process and deadline. Once the department/unit determines their selection, students are recommended to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. FGS will notify the award recipients with an official letter via email.

Selection process

  1. The department will nominate the recipients, for the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. However, students must try and convince their department head as to how this fellowship will help them pursue higher education in Canada.
  2. Once the nominations are sent to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the established committee conducts its own evaluation process. The University of Graduate Fellowship award recipients will be notified with an official letter via email. Other Info Value and duration A. UMGF master’s awards are valued at $14,000 per year for 12 or 24 months, for up to a total of $28,000. B. UMGF doctoral awards are valued at $18,000 per year for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months, for up to a total of $72,000. C. Departments/units determine the value and duration of an award and must meet the eligibility criteria as outlined in the eligibility criteria Box. Period of support available Here are the number of months of UMGF funding a student can receive, based on the number of months they have completed in their program. Total UMGF support for one student is (4) years.
