UNESCO PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA CO SPONSORED FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAMME

With a view to promoting the human resource development and capacity building of developing countries and to enhancing international exchanges in the field of education, culture, communication, science and technology and the friendship among peoples of the world, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has placed at the disposal of UNESCO for the current academic year, under the co-sponsorship with UNESCO, seventy-five (75) fellowships for advanced studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These fellowships will be open to candidates from 135 developing Member States in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe and Arab region. Tenable at a selected number of Chinese universities, these fellowships are intended for students and scholars who plan to pursue advanced studies or undertake individual research with periodic guidance from the assigned supervisors in China for a duration of one year. The study programmes will be taught in English or Chinese, subject to the available fields of study at the selected universities. Candidates applying for the Chinese-taught programmes should have acquired certain level of Chinese proficiency before taking up research or studying in their fields of interest. Eligibility

Candidates must be nationals from the above-mentioned invited Member States, fulfilling the following eligibility requirements: 1. Candidates applying for General Scholar Programmes must hold a high school diploma and should not be older than the age of forty-five (45), and those who apply for Senior Scholar Programmes must be master’s degree holders or an associate professor (or above) and not older than the age of fifty (50). 2. English proficiency is required. For those who apply for Chinese-taught General / Senior programs, his/her Chinese proficiency must reach HSK Level 3. 3. Be in good health, both mentally and physically. 4. Meeting the admission requirements of the applied universities in terms of academic ability, language proficiency, and other relevant criteria.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 41,295 Facilities Offered by the Government of the People’s Republic of China

  1. Tuition waiver;
  2. Monthly stipends: CNY 3, 000 (INR 35, 389) (three thousand Chinese yuan) for General Scholars, or CNY 3 500 (INR 41, 295) (three thousand five hundred Chinese yuan) for Senior Scholars to cover meals and pocket expense;
  3. On-campus accommodation or accommodation subsidy;
  4. Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China. Facilities Offered by UNESCO
  5. One round-trip international travel to and from China;
  6. Monthly pocket allowance of US$ 80 (INR 6, 697) (eighty US dollars), and

Application

No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the grants, it will be automatically considered, once you enroll in the program. Step 1: Read carefully the Application Guidelines for the UNESCO/China Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme to understand the requirements for eligible candidatures and the procedures for the submission of an application. Step 2: Contact the National Commission for UNESCO of your country to enquire about the application procedures at the national level. Applicants are encouraged to contact in advance with their target Chinese universities and apply for admission or pre-admission from the universities. Applicants with admission documents will be prioritized during the fellowship selection. If you have received the pre-admission or admission letters from by the time of submission, please attach the letters in your supporting documents. Step 3: Submit your online application, along with the required supporting documents in the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://www.campuschina.org) as mentioned in the Application Guidelines. Please refer to the Instructions for Online Application for UNESCO/China - the Great Wall Co-sponsored Fellowships Programme, for explicit guidance on online application submission. Step 4: Submit your online application form and the supporting documents to the National Commission for UNESCO of your country. NOTE: As the National Commission for UNESCO of the invited countries will select and transmit the applications of nominated candidates to UNESCO Paris Headquarters by 10 March at the latest, applicants are advised to submit their application to the National Commission as early as possible. Step 5: As soon as you are informed by the National Commission for UNESCO of your country that you are nominated as a candidate for this program, you should communicate your online application form, the serial number of your application, and a photocopy of your passport to thegreatwall@unesco.org. Note: Only applications nominated by the National Commission will be accepted by UNESCO. It is mandatory for each nominated candidate to submit his/her application to the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System before the application deadline. Applications without online registration will not be considered. Step 6: Letters of nomination, copies of the online Application Forms, and passports of the nominated candidates should be submitted to UNESCO by National Commissions by 10 March at the latest. Candidates who submit incomplete applications, or submit online applications beyond this deadline won't be considered. Applicants shall submit the following documents- 1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship in Chinese or English (the form can be downloaded and printed after completing the online application). 2. Copy of Passport home page: a clear scanned copy of the candidate’s ordinary passport with validity later than 1 March must be submitted. 3. Notarized photocopies of the highest diploma: Prospective diploma winners must submit official proof of student status issued by their current schools. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with a notarized Chinese or English translation. 4. Academic transcripts: transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with a notarized Chinese or English translation. 5. Language qualification certificates: Candidates should provide relevant language proficiency certificates in accordance with the universities’ requirements. Candidates who apply for English-taught programs should submit a certificate of international English proficiency tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. In the cases where candidates cannot provide an international English certificate, it is mandatory for him/er to submit a UNESCO Certificate of Language Knowledge (Annex IV), duly signed and stamped by a certified language institution or language tutor to prove the candidate has sufficient language knowledge to attend the courses of study. Those who apply for Chinese-taught programs must submit valid HSK reports that reach HSK Level 3. 6. A Study Plan or Research Proposal of a minimum of 500 words in Chinese or English for the study or research to be undertaken in China. 7. Recommendation Letters: Applicants for Senior Scholar Programmes must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors familiar with the work of the applicants. 8. A photocopy of the Foreign Physical Examination Form (Annex III) completed in English. The physical examination must cover all the items listed in the Foreign Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph, or those without the signature of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take a physical examination, as the result is valid for 6 months. Candidates should keep the original copy of the completed form. 9. Non-criminal record report: a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued within 6 months of the application submission deadline by a local public security authority. 10. Admission documents from a designated Chinese university, such as admission notices, pre-admission letters, invitations from professors, etc. Applicants with admission documents will be prioritized during the fellowship selection. Selection process

  1. Due to the intergovernmental character of UNESCO, individual applications will not be accepted by UNESCO. Only applications endorsed by the National Commissions for UNESCO will be considered. Applicants should submit their application documents through the National Commission.
  2. The National Commission of invited Member States will select qualified candidates and transmit to UNESCO the Letters of nomination, along with the online Application Forms and the photocopies of passports of the nominated candidates.
  3. The selection of fellowship recipients will be made by the concerned Chinese universities, and approved by the Chinese authorities and UNESCO taking into consideration gender equality and diversity. The National Commissions for UNESCO of the selected fellows will be duly informed by UNESCO. As it usually requires at least three weeks for the diplomatic missions to process visa application, fellows are advised to start their visa application as soon as they receive their award.
