UBC VANTAGE ONE EXCELLENCE AWARD

The Vantage One program allocates numerous awards each year based on academic merit and financial need. There are three main awards available within the Vantage One program. Outstanding Student Award: Several awards for outstanding Vantage One students, ranging up to $6000 value. No application required. All students automatically considered. One time award. Entrance Award: This award ranges up to the full cost of the student’s first year tuition in Vantage One. One time award. Application can be found here. Excellence Award: A scholarship ranging in value up to the full cost of the student’s degree at UBC, as well as living costs, for students beginning undergraduate studies in the Vantage One program. Renewable for up to three years beyond Vantage One. The award is made on the recommendation of UBC Vantage College in consultation with the UBC International Student Initiative. Eligibility

A. be an international student, who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, and who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit (visa); B. be entering a UBC undergraduate degree program at the Vancouver or Okanagan campus from a recognized secondary school; C. be applying for their first undergraduate degree; D. be admissible to the program they are applying to, including meeting UBC Vantage College’s English Language Admission Standard (visit www.vantagecollege.ubc.ca/admissions for detailed admissions information); E. have an excellent academic record (at least an “A” average or equivalent standard); F. be nominated by the academic institution they are currently attending or have recently graduated from; G. demonstrate a significant level of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a UBC degree.

Application

No Application Fee and No Separate Application Form is required. Students must be nominated by their respective institutions where they have completed their last education. The application process for the Excellence Award in the Vantage One program includes the following steps:

  1. Eligible students must apply to the Vantage One program.
  2. Applicants must complete and submit an online application for the award through the UBC Student Service Centre.
  3. The application should include all relevant documents, including transcripts, personal statements, and reference letters.
  4. Applications are reviewed and evaluated by a selection committee, and finalists may be invited for an interview.
  5. Recipients of the Excellence Award are notified by email.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Selection process

The selection process for the Excellence Award, which is reserved for undergraduate students attending the Vantage One program and covers the entire cost of their degree at UBC, including living expenses, includes the following steps:

  1. Academic Merit
  2. Financial Need
  3. Personal statement
  4. Extracurricular activities and Achievement
  5. UBC Vantage College assesses each student's academic and financial credentials to determine their eligibility for the award.
  6. After the eligibility review, UBC Vantage College nominates candidates who meet the award's criteria.
  7. A selection committee reviews the nominated candidates and selects recipients based on their academic achievements, leadership skills, community service, and financial need.
  8. UBC Vantage College notifies the selected recipients of the award via email or letter, including information on the prize's value and conditions of renewal.​​​​​​​
