THE DR MANMOHAN SINGH SCHOLARSHIPS

Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship is an initiative of the University of Cambridge for Indian students who wish to pursue a doctoral level of studies at St. John’s College, Cambridge. Named after the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship was started in the year 2009. After having received a graduate degree in Economics (BA -Economics) in the year 1957, Dr Singh was regarded as an Honorary Fellow at St. John’s College. His experience at Cambridge created a profound impact on him that even after decades, he willingly gave his name to this scholarship scheme. The key objective behind introducing this scholarship is to enable exceptionally meritorious students from India to pursue doctoral studies at St. John’s College, Cambridge with special emphasis on subjects like Social Sciences, Economics, Science and Technology. Eligibility

The University has set certain conditions that a student needs to fulfil to be eligible for Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship. The primary condition for the scholarship is that it is open for Indian nationals only. This means that only students with valid Indian passport can apply for it. Besides this, there are several other conditions as well that include –

  1. The age of the applicant should be below 35 years as on 31 December for the commencing year of their course at Cambridge.
  2. The students must have a postgraduate (master’s) degree from a recognised Indian university/institution.
  3. They must have obtained a first-class award in UG and PG in relevant field/subject.
  4. They should be able to provide evidence of their leadership qualities through their personal statements.
  5. They must be willing to pursue a full-time doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge.
  6. They must be proficient in written and spoken English.7. They should also be able to fulfil the admission criteria of the University.

No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the grants, it will be automatically considered, once you enrolled for the program. Applicants who fulfill the eligibility criteria can move ahead and apply for the scholarship. The application process for the Dr. Manmohan Singh Scholarship is entirely online. Step-by-Step Process Before applying for the scholarship, applicants must complete applications to secure admission at the University of Cambridge. Step 1: Choose a doctoral program and a supervisor at the University of Cambridge. Step 2: Complete the admission requirements for the Cambridge doctoral programs:

  1. UG and PG degrees and transcript.
  2. 2 academic/professional reference.
  3. Resume.
  4. Research proposal.
  5. Statement of purpose/ personal essay. Submit the application forms before the admission application deadline. Step 3: Choose St. John’s College as the first preference in the application form. Step 4: Upon confirmation of admission, complete the Dr. Manmohan Singh Scholarship application via the college website to notify the officials at St. John’s. Selection process

Cambridge University follows a strict selection process to select candidates for the Dr. Manmohan Singh Scholarship. The candidates are selected in a two-stage process: Stage I: The core selection committee and the Central Board of St. Johns College and Cambridge University go through the submitted applications and release the initial list of shortlisted candidates. Stage II: The PI round where Skype interviews of candidates shortlisted from the first round are taken and then the final list of grantees is released. ​​​​​​​Within a month of the Skype interview session, the selection committee announces the name of the Dr. Manmohan Singh Scholarship recipient. The decision of the selection committee is final and cannot be challenged. Post Selection: After selection, St. John’s College will coordinate with the shortlisted students for pre-departure, travel arrangements, and U.K. student visas.
