SOUTH ASIA EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
Indian students, commencing the UG or PG program at the University of Newcastle have a chance to obtain the Newcastle International Excellence Scholarship. This is a merit-based scholarship that recognizes applicants with a strong academic background and incentives them to continue striving to be the best that they can be.

Eligibility
The successful scholar must: a. Hold a passport from one of the countries listed under definition of “South Asia” b. Be commencing study in an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree program at the University (excluding ELBP, Enabling, Non-Award, Higher Degrees by Research programs and programs delivered at offshore campuses). c. Be an international full-fee paying student. d. Be commencing in an eligible program at an Australian or Online campus as indicated in your Letter of Offer. e. Not be the beneficiary of a separate University scholarship unless prior approval for special dispensation has been obtained from the university. f. Be able to meet all of the financial obligations of a full-fee paying international student, including the full tuition fee and other expenses. g. Students studying in quota-limited programs. h. Internal transferstudents who are studying at an Australian or Online campus and were not previously awarded the scholarship.
Award & availability
Stated amount: 547,246 The scholarship is valued at AU$10,000 for each year of study under a standard full-time study load (80 units) apportioned over each course taken (pro-rata with an approved reduced study load, credit exemptions, progression or for part-year programs like graduate certificates). a. This equates to AU$1250 per 10-units of study. b. This will be administered for each term of study in your eligible program
- as a tuition fee reduction against the amount of units/number of courses required to complete your program as specified in the University of Newcastle’s program handbook. c. For programs that require more than 80 units full time study load for each year of study, AU$1250 will be paid for each additional 10 units. d. Where the offer to a Master program has been packaged with a graduate certificate, the scholarship is payable for both the graduate certificate and the Master programs. e. Should a recipient need to retake courses or take additional courses to complete the program that exceeds the units of study as indicated in the letter of offer (i.e. the scholarship benefit has been exhausted), then the scholarship benefit will no longer be applied to the remaining units of study to complete the program. The scholarship benefit will be applied in the form of tuition fee waivers directly into the recipient’s University student account. a. This will reduce the tuition fee liability by the scholarship benefit amount for each term per 10-units of study enrolled during the program of study based on enrolment for that term, and maintaining the conditions of the scholarship. b. Recipients will be billed normal tuition fee rates based on their enrolment loads leading into the census date of each eligible term in which the benefit applies. The tuition fee waiver may not be reflected on the tuition fee account until the census date has passed. After census has passed, a fee waiver will be applied to the recipient’s student account. Any overpayments by the recipient will be left on the tuition fee account to allocate to the next term’s fees. a. A recipient who has completed their final program can apply for a refund of unallocated fees. The scholarship is valued at AU$10,000 for each year of study under a standard full-time study load (80 units) apportioned over each course taken (pro-rata with an approved reduced study load, credit exemptions, progression or for part-year programs like graduate certificates).

Selection process
Scholarships are automatically applied for upon application to the University (where eligibility criteria is met).
- Students will receive notification of the value of their scholarship with their offer.
- Should an applicant wish to reject this offer of scholarship, it is the recipient’s responsibility to inform the International Admissions team of the University. Scholarship offers will be made on the basis of academic merit. All academic merit determinations are determined according to the University’s procedures for determining ATAR and GPA. The University reserves the right not to award the scholarship. Other Info CONDITIONS OF AWARD A. The scholarship is payable for the amount of units/number of courses required to complete your program. This excludes units that have been awarded as credit or Recognised Prior Learning, and credit that has been granted after commencement of the eligible program(s) of study. B. The scholarship must be taken up for the program (including master programs packaged with a graduate certificate), and in the intake for which it was awarded. If a recipient defers their offer to a future intake, scholarship eligibility will be reassessed and not guaranteed. C. The scholarship provides a tuition fee waiver and does not cover the costs of visas, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, accommodation, living expenses, SSAF, books and study materials or any other expenses associated with studying at the University. D. The recipient must pay their tuition fees within the stipulated payment deadlines and must remain in good financial standing with the University. E. The recipient must remain compliant with the conditions of their visa, including but not limited to the requirement to maintain a full-time study load if holding a student visa, unless approval is obtained for a reduced study load (visit the University’s webpage for additional details). F. The recipient must maintain international student status for the duration of their enrolment at the University. The scholarship will be terminated if a recipient ceases to be an international student. G. The recipient may be required to participate in a photo shoot and complete a testimonial for the University, which may be published on the University’s website or used for other promotional purposes. The recipient must be willing to be featured in such promotional collateral produced by the University and be involved in promotional activity arranged by the University. Recipients of this scholarship are bound by these terms and conditions and confirms a scholarship holders’ consent to be used for promotional purposes.
