1. Microsoft Research (MSR) India is invting applications for Collaborative Projects on Cloud and AI Technologies for Societal Impact. It is creating a new program to work with academia, government and entrepreneurs to help incubate technologies for societal impact, with special emphasis on Cloud and AI platforms. 2. Project proposals which uses technology (specifically, cloud and AI technologies) to have significant societal impact are encouraged. Though Microsoft Research (MSR) India is open to considering any idea in the intersection of technology and societal impact, but they have a specific interest in the following themes, since the researchers are actively working on these themes, so projects on these themes are likely to find collaborative interest with MSR: a. AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) Technologies for Low Resource Languages b. Ludic Design for Accessibility c. Inclusive employment, crowdsourcing and gig work d. Data science for societal challenges e. Technologies for Health and well-being f. Public Awareness and Combating Misinformation g. Eligibility

Microsoft Research (MSR) India invites project proposals from faculty at universities, social enterprises/start-ups and other entities that have research interests aligned with the above themes. Each project proposal should have one principal leader and can have other co-leaders. Interdisciplinary approaches with collaborations involving technologists, social scientists and entrepreneurs are also welcomed.

Stated amount: 4,743,210 Up to Rs. 35 Lakhs per project (approx. USD 50,000) The exact funding varies depending on:

Microsoft Research India’s Center for Societal Impact through Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) is focused on creating, nurturing, validating, and deploying technologies that will have a large-scale impact on society. The center is dedicated to establishing deep and impactful collaborations with academic groups, startups, NGOs, and other organizations interested in positively impacting society through technology. We provide our collaborators with access to researchers, technologies, expertise, and resources from Microsoft Research, as well as other groups within the company such as Microsoft for Startups. We aspire to identify graduation paths for our projects so they can become self-sustaining initiatives. The collaborations fall into two types those that originate: a. From research projects within MSR and are deployed at scale with collaborators, and b. With external collaborators to identify and develop solutions for problems.
