LEIDEN UNIVERSITY EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP (LEXS)
Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is given to non-EEA/non-EFTA candidates who wish to commence a Master’s degree program except LLM advanced level. The scholarship is also provided to all students who want to pursue LLM at an advanced Level or Masters in International Relations and Diplomacy at Leiden University irrespective of their nationalities. Applicants must be in the top 10% of the graduates in his/her previous study programs. External applications along with admission applications must be submitted before the deadline. Eligibility
Applicants must meet admission requirements at Leiden University to be eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS). Along with that, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements listed below:
- Non-EEA/non-EFTA nationals must enrol in the Master courses at Leiden University eligible.
- Applicants must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport.
- Must have achieved excellent grades and have a good achievement record at the university level.
- Must be in the top 10% of the graduates in his/her previous study programs.
Award & availability
Stated amount: 1,375,305 The LExS is awarded for the duration of the study programme. There are three available levels of awards:
- € 10,000 of the tuition fee
- € 15,000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application. Information is not Available.
Application
There is no separate application fee for the scholarship.
- Apply online for admission to a Master's programme at Leiden University. Note: it can take up to 2 days to create/submit an application for admission, so start your application well before the LExS deadline.
- After submitting your application for admission, return to the Apply screen in your online application and click on Scholarships. If you are eligible to apply for the LExS, it will now be visible in the scholarships section. Note: if you cannot see the LExS in your scholarships section, you have either not yet submitted your application for admission or are not eligible for the LExS.
- Indicate that want to apply for the LExS then upload your LExS motivation letter. This must be a PDF file of max. 500 words, in which you explain why you would like to be considered for the award.
- Submit your scholarship application before the LExS deadline. Please be aware that after submitting your scholarship application, you cannot make changes to it either online or by sending additional items by email.
- If you are applying for more than one study programme/specialisation and wish to apply for a LExS for each, you must submit a LExS application and motivation letter within each separate online application for admission. Late applications Late scholarship applications will not be considered. Selection process
- The faculty selection committees will nominate their LExS recipients within 6 weeks of the LExS deadline.
- All applicants will receive an email notifying them whether they have been awarded a LExS: i. At the end of November (for programmes starting in February) ii. At the end of April (for study programmes starting in September)
- The selection of the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is based on the application, personal statement, and interview.
- The candidates applying for the scholarship are nominated by the faculty selection committee who inform the scholarship team within 6 weeks of the deadline.
- Recipients are then notified by the scholarship team regarding the outcome. Other Info Terms & Conditions
- In prior academic education, the student must have achieved excellent study results which are relevant for the programme for which the student wishes to enrol. As an indication, the student will be among the top 10% for the relevant programme followed abroad.
- The student has a non-EU/EEA passport and is not eligible for support under the Dutch student finance system "Studiefinanciering". For more information, please refer to: www.duo.nl. This does not apply to LLM Advanced Studies programmes and the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy. For these programmes, the LExS programme is open to all nationalities.
- The LExS is only valid for the period the student is registered at Leiden University as a full time student within the time frame of the study programme. The maximum study period for a 1-year programme (60EC) is 12 months. The maximum study period for a 2-year programme (120EC) is 24 months.
- Continuation of the LExS is not guaranteed when a student changes their degree programme during the course of their studies. Requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis and the final decision will be taken by the relevant faculty selection committee(s). If the change of degree programme takes place before the student has registered on the study programme, the LExS scholarship will be revoked and the student will have to re-apply for the scholarship.
- A LExS granted for the academic year as specified in the decision letter cannot be transferred to another academic year or to a later intake within the same academic year. If a student has been awarded a LExS for the September (or February) intake and decides to postpone their participation in the study programme, the LExS will be revoked. Requests to transfer the LExS to a later intake will be reviewed on a case by case basis and the final decision will be taken by the relevant faculty selection committee(s).
