In supersession of all previous rules governing the grant or renewal Scholarship to the Students of Lakshadweep Islands the grant of Scholarship and other educational concessions to the pupils of Lakshadweep Islands, shall be governed by the following rules. The object of the Scholarship scheme applicable to the Lakshadweep Islands is to ensure that no students is prevented on the ground of poverty alone from pursuing an academic career. The award under this scheme will be made on the basis of the results of the following examinations- 1. Class VII examination of High/Higher Secondary Schools. 2. School Leaving Examinations / viz. Matriculations, High School/Higher Secondary School Leave Examination. 3. P.D.C. or equivalent University Examinations viz. Pre-Professional Examinations. 4. First Degree Examinations, viz. B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./B.Sc.(Agri) Examinations. Eligibility

All those candidates who secure pass marks in the examinations mentioned above will be eligible for the grant of Scholarships. 1- Students who belong to one or he other of the following categories shall only be eligible for the award of Scholarship under these rules.

  1. A student who and both of whose parents were born in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep Islands.
  2. A student who and whose mother or father are born Islanders while the father or mother of students is a mainlander provided that the student and his/her father or mother who is the Islander who have their residence in the Islands. 2- An awardee under this rule will not be allowed to receive any other, regular Scholarship or stipend. In case she/he is receiving of any such other award, the same must be surrendered. The amount if any received under the latter, refunded before the benefit of the award under those can be claimed. The awardee will however be permitted to enjoy the concession if any awarded to him/her by the institution, where he/she is studying or by the Administration. 3- The Scholar will be free to follow any course of study in Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture, Law and Commerce in any recognised institutions in India subject to the conditions laid down in sub rule (5) below. In the case of professional course, only the admission to these courses should be secured immediately after the Scholar has achieved the minimum admission requirements. 4- Educational concessions will be granted or reviewed on the mainland only for studies in such of the standard or classes or courses for which facilities do not exists in any of the Islands in the Union Territory.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 1,800 The students of UT of Lakshadweep studying in the mainland for high school course or equivalent will be paid scholarship @ Rs. 200/- per month and those doing primary school course (I-VIII) will be paid Rs. 100/- per month. The scholarship for these two courses will how- ever be sanctioned only under special circumstances of health and physical disability. The children of UT of Lakshadweep studying in Island institutions will be granted scholarships at the following rates- SI. NO. ITEM Rate of Scholarship

There will be no restrictions on the number of Scholarships to be awarded at various stages in a year, provided that funds are available in sanctioned budget of the Administration for the years.

Selection process

Selection will be based on the basis of the fulfillment of the eligibility criteria and the results of the following examinations: 1- Class 7 examination of High/Higher Secondary Schools. 2- School leaving examinations/viz. Matriculations, High/Higher Secondary Leave examination. 3- P.D.C. or equivalent University examinations viz. Pre-professional examinations. 4- First-degree examinations, viz. B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./B.Sc.(Agri) examinations. Applications will be evaluated. The final decision would be made by the respective authorities. Other Info Duration and Renewal of Scholarships

  1. For the award or renewal of Scholarship the Scholar should make an application in writing according to the procedure laid down in sub rule (5) below. The Scholarship once awarded will be tenable from the start of the secondary School Course (Standard VIII to X as the case may be) to the post graduate stage, including research). The same can thus extended to M.A./ M.Sc./Ph.D. stages subject to the requirements in sub rule (2) below.
  2. The Scholarship will be awarded from year to year subject to satisfactory progress and the fulfilment of the following conditions. A Scholarship will ordinarily be tenable for one year in one and the same standard or class. Provided that for Special reasons to be recorded the Director of Education may make the Scholarship up to two years in one and same class or standard but only once in a whole course.
  3. A Scholarship once cancelled or forfeited will not be restored.
  4. The Scholarship will be renewed for each successive year; subject to what is stated above, on the basis of the annual progress report (submitted by the Head of Institution where the Scholar is studying). It will be the duty of the scholar to see that as soon as the result of the Annual examination is declared, the proforma of the Annual progress reports as given in annexure I is got filled by the head of the institution and despatched to the Director of Education of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep along with the application from the scholar for grant or renewal of the scholarship so as to reach him before 1st August of the year. The Director of Education on receipt of this applications with proforma duly completed will process the renewal of the scholarship. a. It will also be the duty of the scholar to furnish with his application the nativity certifi- cate obtained from the authority concerned. b. The head of the institution will be requested by Director of Education to bring to his notice any adverse report that may have been necessitated due to scholar habitual irregularity, misbehaviour participation in strike etc.
