KHORANA PROGRAM FOR SCHOLARS
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF), and WINStep Forward are partnering to support the prestigious Khorana Program for Scholars named in honour of Dr Har Gobind Khorana, who won the Nobel Prize in 1968 for his work at the interface of Chemistry and Biology while a member of the UW faculty. The Khorana Program will provide opportunities for Indian students to undertake research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) and partner universities in the summer for a period of 10-12 weeks. The Program is envisaged to: 1. Provide encouragement to young scholars to undertake R&D. 2. Enable students to carry out research at a premier University in the United States. 3. Transform research into societal benefits and build a seamless scientific community between India and the United States. Eligibility
Only Indian students currently enrolled at a recognized Institution of Higher Education in India can apply for the Khorana Program. Pre-final year students enrolled in B.Tech., M. Tech., MSc., B.E., M.E., M.S., Integrated B.S-M.S., B.Sc, B.V.Sc., M.V.Sc., B. Pharm., M. Pharm., MBBS., and Master in Medical Science and Technology (MMST) at recognized institutions of higher education in India in Biotechnology and allied areas (including agricultural, food, health, biomedical sciences and interdisciplinary areas like Computational Sciences, Big Data, Machine Learning etc.) completing their degrees on or after May are eligible to apply. The applicant should have:
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 8.0 or higher, OR,
- Percentage: 80% and higher. First Year, Final year and PhD students are NOT eligible to apply. Applications in subject - fields other than those specified in the advertisement will not be considered.
Award & availability
Stated amount: 293,178 The Khorana Scholar will be entitled to a stipend of US$ 3,000/- for the entire duration of the internship (10-12 weeks). The Khorana Scholar is advised to open a temporary bank a/c near his/her U.S. Host University. The stipend would be then be disbursed to the Khorana Scholar through a wire transfer to this account. Air-tickets for all the selected Khorana Scholars would be provided directly by the IUSSTF Travel Desk (traveldesk@indousstf.org) by economy class and shortest route from their place of work in India to the U.S. host institute and back (upto $2500/-). Normally, as per IUSSTF rules, reimbursements will not be provided for air tickets purchased directly but, under some exceptional circumstances IUSSTF may consider reimbursements as per the approved budget or at actuals, whichever is less. IUSSTF should be informed for ticketing at least 6 weeks before the date of travel. The Khorana Scholar will be entitled to Health Insurance upto $600/- or at actuals whichever is less. U.S. federal regulations stipulate that Exchange Visitors/ Students have adequate health insurance cover during their stay in the U.S. It is critical that the insurance plan taken by the intern meets the minimum insurance coverage requirements of the U.S. Host University. The Insurance cover rates vary according to the age of the intern and the duration of their stay in the United States. The Medical Insurance cover has to be obtained by the intern as per the Host University guidelines. The Khorana Scholar will be reimbursed upto $500/- or at actuals whichever is less. In case the U.S. Host Institution bears the cost for the Scholar’s medical insurance, IUSSTF will reimburse the costs to the U.S. Host Institution accordingly. Scholars are requested to retain the exchange rate conversion receipt/bank statements while purchasing the health insurance and the same should be submitted to IUSSTF along with the premium receipt in order to make the reimbursement claim. The reimbursement will be made in Indian Rupees directly to the Scholars’ respective Indian bank accounts by RTGS bank transfer after their return to India upon successful completion of internship. Total 50 fellowships are given under this program every year.

- Pre-final year students enrolled in B.Tech., M. Tech., B.Sc., MSc., B.E., M.E., B.S. M.S., Integrated B.S-M.S., B.V.Sc., M.V.Sc., B. Pharm., M. Pharm., MBBS., and Master in Medical Science and Technology (MMST) at recognized institutions of higher education in India in Biotechnology and allied areas are eligible to apply.
- Only those candidates who have a minimum of one year remaining for the completion of their course in India are eligible to apply. First Year, Final Year and Ph.D. students are NOT eligible to apply.
- The applicant should have: Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 8.0 or higher, OR, Percentage: 80% and higher. Minimum 65% and higher if the applicant is an MBBS student.
- Candidates are encouraged to fill out the online application and upload scanned copies of latest marksheet/transcript, No-Objection Certificate & 2 Letters of Recommendation. Supporting documents should be provided strictly according to the check-list mentioned in the application form. Please DO NOT attach Class X/Class XII marksheets.
- Recommendation letters can be sent along with the application form or if referees wish to provide a confidential recommendation, they may send it directly to scholar@indousstf.org with Applicant’s full name in the subject line.
- Hard copies of the application form/supporting documents are not required.

- Academic background and credentials; Research interests, possible project ideas and career goals;
- Research experience, technical background, other internships, courses, lab work;
- Proposed project idea(s);
- Need to conduct research in the U.S. and
- Publications, Poster presentations (if any).
