INDIA SCIENCE MEDIA FELLOWSHIPS

The India Science Media Fellowships is a joint venture of the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance (India Alliance). The Fellowship aims to train corpus of young reporters in science journalism, create awareness in newsrooms about building capacity for science journalism, build a bridge between scientific community and media, and encourage coverage of science in the Indian media. The fellowship is open for Indian journalists to report on life sciences, specifically around biomedicine, application-based or basic biological research, and health. Fellowship Themes: Applicants can choose to focus on life sciences, biomedicine, application-based or basic biological research, and health. Media fellows can look at ongoing research in laboratories and centers of higher learning, scientific conferences or peer reviewed science and elsewhere for their story ideas during the fellowship. Possible story sources and mentors will be discussed during the workshop. Eligibility

To be eligible for the Fellowship, an applicant must: ​​​​​​​

  1. Be a professional journalist (either staff or freelancer) in print, broadcast or new media in English or any Indian regional language (Fellows who choose to write in a regional language should be proficient in written English too)
  2. Have at least three years of demonstrated experience in writing on science or related issues.

Stated amount: 100,000 The fellowship will provide a grant of INR 1, 00, 000 to five grantees selected through a nation-wide call for applications. Fellowship: The Fellowship is meant to cover expenses to be incurred for field travel, research and writing/broadcasting. Selection process

  1. First All the application form will be evaluated.
  2. After evaluation, eligible candidates will be shortlisted for the scholarship.
  3. Shortlisting of candidates will be done by authorities.
  4. Selected fellows will have the opportunity to create a strong body of work by publishing or broadcasting stories in their respective media outlets. The larger objective is to enable and enrich public understanding of science and related policy issues through leads presented by the stories.
  5. Fellows will be invited for a two-day orientation workshop in New Delhi. They will have the opportunity to connect with science and communication experts and mentors to deliberate on nuances of communication and dynamics of impactful reportage.   6. Media Fellows can choose to focus on life sciences, biomedicine, application-based or basic biological research, and health. They can look at ongoing research in laboratories and centres of higher learning, scientific conferences, or peer reviewed science and elsewhere for their story ideas during the fellowship. Fellows may use different story-telling approaches, like in-depth or investigative reporting, in any medium—including online, print, audio, video, and data visualization. The fellowship is open to both freelance and staff journalists
  7. The selected Fellows will be invited for an orientation workshop (either virtual or in New Delhi). They will have the opportunity to connect with science and communication experts and mentors to deliberate on nuances of communication and dynamics of impactful reportage. The cost for travel and accommodation for the grantees to participate in the orientation workshop will be met by the organisers.
  8. The selected fellows will work with assigned mentors from the field of science journalism for advice; they will also have access to a panel of scientists throughout the fellowship period. In addition, an expert coordinator will work with the fellows to ensure successful completion of progress deadlines, and for advice and support with final deliverables.
  9. Fellows must produce at least FIVE stories (each 1000 words or more) on the selected topic. Two short news items (500 words each) will constitute one story, and if a fellow opts to produce only news stories then TEN stories will be required for completion of the fellowship. Similar guidelines will be issued for any selected radio, television, or multimedia journalists.
