As an addition to its prestigious Hornby Scholarship programme, the A.S. Hornby Educational Trust is inviting applications from experienced teachers of English who are now working with refugee communities in the UK. The successful applicant will join a group of Hornby scholars from a range of different countries to study on a one-year Masters in TESOL at the University of Exeter. This is a dedicated scholarship for the teaching of English as a second language to refugees. Eligibility

The Hornby Scholarship is intended to support experienced English language teachers who: ​​​​​​​

  1. Are legally resident in the UK.
  2. Hold (or have previously held) refugee status.
  3. Have at least three years' full-time ELT (English Language Teaching) experience.
  4. Have a full university first degree.
  5. Are teaching English to refugees or asylum seekers. ​​​​​​​The successful candidate will have the potential to make a significant future contribution to English language teaching in the context of language support for refugees. The University of Exeter may also require a valid language test.

  1. The scholarship covers all tuition fees and will provide a monthly stipend towards living expenses over the academic year.
  2. The Trust will also pay the costs of any approved language test if this is required. Around 10 scholarships are offered each academic year, often in partnership with institutions.​​​​​​​

Selection process

The scholarship features a four-stage selection process listed below:

  1. Online application form – The candidates submit the online application form for an initial assessment.
  2. Interview – The applicants who clear stage 1 are called for an interview round at the office of the British Council in their country of origin.
  3. Application to the University – If the applicant is selected in the interview, he or she will be invited to apply to the university for further consideration.
  4. University acceptance – The scholarship award is confirmed for the candidate and arrangements are made for him or her to arrive in the United Kingdom to join the classes. Other Info Information you will need for your application- Before you start the application you will need to have information to complete the following sections: About You- Your personal details: full name, date of birth, and nationality. Your contact details: email address, preferred address for correspondence, and telephone number. English Language level- If your first language is not English, you may need to take a language test. The University requires all MA students to have the necessary level of English to be able to benefit from the course. For the MEd TESOL the required level is the equivalent to IELTS 6.5 overall and no less than 6 in any section. If you have already taken one of the English language tests accepted by the university please provide details of your results. Academic background- Details of all academic qualifications obtained since completing your secondary education: details of each qualification you have, the class or level achieved, the institution, subject and dates. Also indicate those courses which were entirely or mainly English medium – i.e. where the language of instruction or supervision was English. Professional background- Details of each position held since completing your tertiary education, starting from the most recent and working backwards. Give the name of the position, the organization, and the dates you were employed. Referees- Details of two referees who will give references for you if you are long-listed for an interview – name, professional title or position, email address, length of time you have known the referee, and their professional relationship to you. Supporting statements- This is an essential part of your application. If you pass the eligibility criteria your application will be evaluated based on your answers in this section. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate that they would not only be able to cope with the demands of studying for an MA degree but who also have the potential to make a significant future contribution to the teaching of English language to refugees and to support the development of learners and teachers in that field. We therefore look at the quality of your response from the perspective of where you are in your teaching career, your future potential, how well your expectations and qualities match the study programme, and the level of your written English.
