GHENT UNIVERSITY PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications are open for the fully funded Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships. The Ghent University Scholarships are excellent opportunities for international students who want to pursue doctoral education in Europe. This fully funded doctoral scholarship is initiated for scholars from developing countries who wish to establish a name for themselves in the field of science. The Ghent University doctoral scholarship attracts brilliant brains from all around the world. The fully funded Ghent University scholarships provide an opportunity to gain practical experience by allowing them to become a critical member of a diverse community of researchers. The Ghent University doctoral scholarships also help applicants broaden their knowledge by allowing them to participate in various research activities while being guided by top experts. With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University ('North') and half at a university in a developing country ('South'). Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months). Eligibility

  1. Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – a developing countries. (see country list).
  2. The proposals must be jointly submitted by a candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university (South).
  3. No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless, preference will be given to topics that are relevant for the development.
  4. Only degree students (students who intend to obtain a (joint) Ph.D. degree at Ghent University) are welcome to apply. Exchange students cannot apply for this scholarship.
  5. Ghent University wants to encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. That is why a Ghent University supervisor can support maximum 2 candidates per call on the condition they are of a different gender.
  6. This program is meant for students at the beginning of their PhD. To a limited extent, PhD students are allowed to have already completed preliminary research. At the time the fellowship starts, a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research must still be required to complete the PhD.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 740,220 Scholarship funding

  1. Ph.D. scholarship at Ghent University (in total 24 months).
  2. The Ghent University promoter receives a bench fee of € 310 (INR 28, 683)/per month of research in Ghent + € 8000 (INR 7, 40, 220) travel budget to cover (part of) the operational costs, as well as part of the traveling costs of the student and both the Ghent University and the local promoter. ​​​​​​​Cofounding Co-financing is mandatory with this scholarship, for more a detail about which co-financing is allowed, please consult the call documents. In general, the following partnership conditions need to be fulfilled: ​​​​​​​1. There must be a local Ph.D. supervisor at the partner university or research center in the South.
  3. A written statement from the partner university is requested stating that the candidate will receive a full-time local PhD scholarship or salary for a period of 24 months when working on the Ph.D. at the partner university in the South.
  4. Will be sufficiently exempted from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate on the Ph.D. research in the South. Applicants can dedicate a maximum 10 % of their time (full-time appointment) to other tasks (teaching and other tasks). No. of scholarships is subject to availability, please visit official website.

Application

No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the scholarship, it will be automatically considered, once you enrolled for the program. Application forms must be submitted (in English) electronically via e-mail to BOFapplication@ugent.be. The Ghent University supervisor must submit the following 2 documents:

  1. Advice on the candidate, stating the supervisor's opinion on the capability of the candidate as a future researcher.

Selection process

The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations obtained from members of the Council for Development Cooperation. Please consult the call documents regarding the importance and definition of development relevance. Selection criteria:

  1. The qualifications of the applicant.
  2. The relevance of the research topic for development & capacity building.
  3. The doctoral project. (Including the scientific/scholarly potential of the promoter’s research group(s); including the partnership between Ghent University and the local institute; the scientific/scholarly potential of the local institute). Other Info Mobility scheme of the scholarship The following mobility scheme is mandatory:
  4. Students need to start and end with a research stay of 3 -12 months in at Ghent University.
  5. At least 24 months of locally funded research in the South must be scheduled in between the first and last research stay at Ghent University. Exceptions to the mandatory mobility scheme
  6. Applicants who can demonstrate that they are unable to start their 4 year PhD research with a research stay at Ghent University because the partner university/research center in the South requires a successful completion of a PhD study program in their university before commencing further research activities, can request an exception to the mobility scheme;
  7. Applicants who can demonstrate that they are unable to start their 4 year PhD research with a research stay at Ghent University because they must first complete a period of field research in the South can apply for an exception to the mobility scheme;
  8. Applicants who can demonstrate that they have successfully completed a full-time funded PhD study period (of up to 12 months) at the partner university/research center in the South can request to integrate this period in the required 24 months of locally funded research stay in the South;
  9. Applicants who can demonstrate that they have successfully completed a full-time funded PhD study period (of up to 12 months) at Ghent University can request to integrate this period in the required 24 months of researach period at Ghent University.
