Commonwealth Scholarships are aimed at students from across the Commonwealth who would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the UK. By funding postgraduate studies in a range of different study formats, the scheme helps to support future innovators and leaders. This historic award is the UK’s primary scholarship scheme focused on contributing to the UK's international development aims. It is designed to attract outstanding talent to UK universities while supporting sustainable development overseas. Eligibility
- To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country. You will still be eligible if you are a refugee or a British-protected person.
- You need to have an undergraduate honours degree of at least upper second class (2:1). If you wish to study a PhD, you will need an appropriate master’s degree too.
- Finally, you must be unable to afford to study in the UK without a scholarship.
Award & availability
Stated amount: 137,828
- Approved airfare to the United Kingdom and return at the end of the award (the CSC will neither reimburse the cost of fares for dependents, nor usually the cost of journeys made before the award is finally confirmed).
- Approved tuition and examination fees.
- Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £ 1,043 per month, or £ 1,279 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area
- Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, wherever applicable.
- Warm clothing allowance, wherever applicable.
- Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the United Kingdom or overseas.
- For Ph.D. Scholars, fieldwork grants are towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to the scholar fieldwork location).
- For Ph.D. Scholars, paid mid-term visits (airfare) to their home country (unless they have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse and/or child allowances during their scholarship, or have received a return airfare to their home country for fieldwork).
- If a scholar is widowed, divorced, or a single parent (irrespective of the length of her scholarship), a child allowance of £448 per month for the first child, and £110 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16 if the scholar is accompanied by his/her children and they are living with him/her at the same address in the UK. Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships are aimed at talented individuals who have the potential to make change. The CSC offers around 800 awards for postgraduate study and professional development each year.

Selection process
- Only shortlisted candidates are called for interview and the Selection Committee consisting of subject experts interviews the candidates. Based on merit, the nominations are made. The nominations are sent to Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for final selection.
- Nomination of a candidate by the Government of India does not, in any way, guarantee final selection or placement. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission makes its own selection out of overall nominees recommended by all the participating countries in the Programme.
