The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is administered by Canada’s three research granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth. The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to: 1. attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally 2. develop their leadership potential 3. position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow Aiming to retain top-tier postdoctoral talent both nationally and internationally, Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded to students contributing to Canada's economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career.

Eligibility
- Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or International students.
- Fulfilled all degree requirements for Ph.D., Ph.D. equivalent or health professional degree. Host Institution Eligibility:
- Canadian universities
- Foreign universities
- Affiliated research hospitals, colleges and not-for-profit organizations.
Award & availability
Stated amount: 4,338,732 A taxable fellowship stipend of 70,000 CAD ($52,637) is awarded each year. The fellowships are distributed equally among Canada’s three research agencies-
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
- Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Applicant’s should be in the area of Health research, Natural sciences and/or engineering, or Social sciences and/or humanities A total of 70 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded annually.

To apply, the applicant needs to go through the following steps: Register for Canadian Common CV (CCV) and ResearchNet accounts
- CCV account- a web-based tool to generate CVs
- ResearchNet Account- web-based application tool and database used by Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program Create CCV (Vanier-Banting academic template) and Link to ResearchNet
- CCV required irrespective of the citizenship of the applicant
- A confirmation number will be provided once the CCV is validated Attach Documents:
- Significance of research contributions
- Significance of leadership contributions
- Fulfillment of degree requirements form Special circumstances
- Identify Referees: Three references are required. The references must be either in English or French.
- Degree Information: Information regarding Ph.D., Ph.D. equivalent or health professional degree Proposal Information and Supporting Documents
- Information regarding the research project needs to be submitted
- Must include overview, details, descriptors or keywords and attachments
Selection process
All the eligible Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships applications go through the review process by the selection committee. First of all, the applications are sorted and sent to the respective federal granting agencies.
- Applications pertaining to health research will be sent to the (CIHR) selection committee
- Applications related to natural sciences and/or engineering to the (NSERC) selection committee
- Applications related to social sciences and/or humanities will be directed to the (SSHRC) selection committee. The selection of a candidate is based on three equally weighted selection criteria:
- Applicant's research excellence based on the previous records demonstrated research contribution to the target groups and leadership qualities in his/her respective domain.
- Quality and potential of the applicant’s proposed research programs and the impact on the society the research program are likely to bestow if finished successfully.
- Host institutions research-oriented environment and the relationship it holds with the applicant Other Info The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program aims to attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally, to develop their leadership potential and to position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow, positively contributing to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career. Benefits and deductions A Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is a stipend and not a salary. Therefore, it is not eligible for:
- Canada Pension Plan (CPP);
- Employment Insurance (EI); or
- Other non-discretionary benefits. However, institutional policies related to the status of postdoctoral researchers and fellowship payments may differ according to specific legislation and/or institutional policies. Regardless, other than for taxation purposes, no part of the fellowship can be withheld by the host institution without prior written consent from the fellow.
