The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship program is designed for international students entering the university to pursue a UG degree. The scholarship program applies to all the American University UG programs. The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity. Bringing together the best of AU - academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement - the AU Emerging Global Leader achieves, inspires, and serves with vision. The AU EGL is dedicated to positive civic and social change and will return home to improve under-resourced, underserved communities in their home country. Eligibility
- International students who have overcome various obstacles and challenges as well as those from diverse and underrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- A minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent out of 4.0 GPA (or in the top 10% of graduating class) for 9th-12th grades.
- A demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and to advancing the needs of people in their home country.
- Students with one of the following: a. 95+ TOEFL iBT (all subscores must be 20 or above) b. Sub-scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL c. 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or above) d. 33 minimum SAT Reading subscore e. Score of 630 or higher on the SAT Digital version section entitled "Evidence-Based Reading and Writing" (EBRW) f. 29 minimum ACT English g. 65 minimum PTE h. 125+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 115 or above) I. Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. Each sub-score must be 169 or higher.
- Students who are still enrolled in secondary/high school and graduating by June.
- Important: Students in the IB system should plan to graduate with a full IB diploma with at least 3 HL subjects. Students studying in the British A-Levels system must complete at least 3 A levels and finish 13 years of study before August.
Award & availability
Stated amount: 335,907
- The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses (full tuition, room, and board) for two international students who will need a non-immigrant visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States.
- The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes, and miscellaneous expenses which students will need to pay out of pocket (approximately US$4, 000 (INR 3, 35, 907) per year).
- The AU EGL scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance. Students interested in all majors offered at AU are eligible to apply. New: AU EGL partial scholarships! We’re excited to share that in addition to the two full 2025 AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarships covering all billable expenses, AU will also offer up to eight additional generous AU EGL partial scholarships valued at up to US$40, 000 (INR 33,59, 268)/per year. No additional application process is needed to be eligible for AU EGL partial scholarships. Partial scholarship candidates will be selected from talented applicants who complete the AU EGL scholarship process successfully. If you are recommended for an AU EGLs partial scholarship, you will need to submit proof of additional funds beyond the initial US$4, 000 (INR 3, 35, 907) for the difference not covered by the AU EGLS partial scholarship. For example, if you are offered US$40, 000 (INR 33,59, 268)/year, you will need to submit financial documents confirming US$42, 000 (INR 35, 27, 242) on account for your first year instead of the full estimated costs of US$81, 620 (INR 68, 54, 607). Application
No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the grants, it will be automatically considered, once you enrolled for the program. The AU Emerging Global Leadership Scholarship application process involves two steps: Step 1: Applicants who wish to be considered for AU EGLS full or partial scholarships must first submit their Common or Coalition application and all supporting documents before December 1. Step 2: Submit the AU EGL Scholarship application and essays via your applicant portal by the required December 1, special program deadline. You must complete Step 1 before submitting the AU EGLS application. Late applications will not be considered. Application Instructions- 1. Complete and submit the Common Application or Coalition Application with all required documents per the AU international instructions checklist before December 1. 2. Create your applicant portal when invited to do so. 3. Submit a bank letter and the completed and signed AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF), each confirming a minimum of US$4,000. These can be uploaded via your applicant portal. 4. Submit your official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE, or Cambridge Assessment English Test score results before December 1. Please have official English proficiency score reports sent directly by the testing agency to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia. Note: Students cannot submit their results. 5. Students who do not submit a complete application packet with all supporting documents by the December 1 deadline will not be reviewed. 6. If you are applying through a program supported by EducationUSA or if you are a past FLEX or YES high school scholarship recipient from the U.S. Department of State, please provide a letter from your EducationUSA center's adviser confirming your candidacy. You may request for the letter to be sent to levinson@american.edu as a PDF. 7. If you are not selected as one of the finalists, you may still be considered for admission to American University, Washington, DC and eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, to continue the application process, you will need to submit proof of funds totaling up to US$81, 620 (INR 68, 54, 607) (estimated costs for first year of study). Selection process
1. The selection process for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is conducted by the university itself. AU EGL finalists and semifinalists will have to go through Skype Interviews and submit additional essay submissions. 2. Priority will be given to the applicants who will submit their AU EGLS form, Common/Coalition Application, and International admissions at AU before December 1. 3. Applicants must note that if they are not shortlisted for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, they are still eligible for a partial merit scholarship. Other Info Your Academic Records Please have your official academic records from each secondary school you attended for the U.S. equivalent of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades sent directly from those schools to American University, Washington, DC via the Common or Coalition Application or mailed by courier service to American University in sealed envelopes. Students who study in 3-year secondary school systems only need to provide transcripts for those three years. These records should be submitted in their original language and accompanied by notarized English translations if applicable. Ask your secondar school to include any predicated or final examination results from exams such as IB, GCSE, GCE, Bagrut, French Baccalaureate, CAPE Units One and Two, Abitur, Attestat, or Secondary School Leaving Certificates, if available. Certain exam results such as, but not limited to, IB, WAEC, GCE, GCSE, and CAPE must come directly to our office from the examination board or authority. Letters of Recommendation Although only one letter of recommendation from a teacher is required with your application, we strongly encourage you also ask your school's university counselor, principal, or headmaster to submit a second letter of recommendation. These letters are confidential. Each letter must be in English. Recommenders can upload recommendation letters directly onto the Common or Coalition Application. If sent by courier mail, please have your reference sign or place a school stamp across the sealed flap of the envelope. English Proficiency AU requires strong English language skills. All first-year applicants (including U.S. citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents) can prove English proficiency by either curriculum or testing.
