We are proud to support the next generation of leaders in emerging technology areas in their pursuit of academic excellence through scholarship funding that can enable the student to devote their full time to their academic studies. These scholarships are intended for graduate students conducting full-time research in key emerging technology areas of information and communications technologies (ICT) and advanced materials and manufacturing technologies (AMM), ensuring that Albertan universities and companies are able to recruit top talent. The Graduate Student Scholarships program is administered by Alberta universities and overseen by Post Secondary Investments and Emerging Technologies (PSIET) within Alberta Innovates. PSIET provides funding, enabling and matchmaking to emerging technology inventors to increase the volume of ALBERTA INNOVATES commercial outcomes for Alberta’s future prosperity. Eligibility

This scholarship program is open to Canadian, permanent resident, and international graduate students conducting full-time research in key emerging technology areas of information and communications technologies (ICT) and advanced materials and manufacturing technologies (AMM) at one of the following post-secondary institutions. ​​​​​​​View the list of the college below:

  5. University of Lethbridge Eligible applicant requirements:
  6. There are no citizenship restrictions on this award.
  7. A minimum of 3.5 GPA is an eligibility requirement for all applicants. The GPA will be calculated based on the current graduate program graded course work at the University of Alberta, or, if a student is newly admitted, the admission GPA (AGPA) will be used to determine eligibility.
  8. Students applying for a master's level Alberta Innovates GSS must have been admitted to their master's program no earlier than Spring.
  9. Students applying for a doctoral level Alberta Innovates GSS must have been admitted to their doctoral program no earlier than Spring. This includes any time spent in a master’s program (if transferred from master’s to doctoral program).
  10. Areas of study and research must fall into the categories funded by Alberta Innovates: Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMM).
  11. Each candidate must be sponsored by a faculty supervisor, possessing both a record of productive research within an Alberta Innovates-funded research area (ICT and AMM) and sufficient resources to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the research.
  12. For those not yet registered in a graduate program at UAlberta, your eligibility to apply for the Alberta Innovates GSS is contingent upon meeting all eligibility requirements for admission to a UAlberta graduate program. Applicants are to contact their prospective department for information on those requirements.
  13. Students cannot simultaneously hold and/or receive more than a total of four years of combined master’s/doctoral support from Alberta Innovates (across all programs). This includes support from the Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship, Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship for Data-Enabled Innovation, the Alberta Innovates Graduate Studentship (Health), and the Alberta SPOR SUPPORT Unit (AbSPORU) Graduate Studentships.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 2,600,735 The program offers funding ranging from $12,000 (INR 10, 06, 736) - $31,000 (INR 26, 00, 735) per year, and the terms vary from one to four years, depending on the recipient’s time in the program. Scholarships are limited.

Application

No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the grants, it will be automatically considered, once you enrolled for the program.

  2. Submit your application to your institution.
  3. Wait for your application to be reviewed. A complete application includes:
  4. Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship Application Form - for questions related to the content of each section, students are encouraged to seek advise from their program supervisor(s) or department. Students may also refer to the Tips & Tools for a Successful Scholarship Application located under Award Resources webpage.
  5. Up-to-date Transcripts of the student's complete academic record (this includes all undergraduate and graduate studies, completed or ongoing): a. Unofficial U of A transcript (can be obtain from BearTracks) that shows current term registration b. Copies of OFFICIAL transcripts from all other post-secondary institutions attended, if applicable. This includes (but is not limited to): a. all other Canadian and foreign transcripts (i.e. show all coursework and grades, and conferral of any degrees) b. all transfer credit transcripts (even if they were transferred to this university) c. all transcripts of incomplete work/non-degree study/qualifying years, etc d. one copy of the legend (reverse of each transcript) must be included e. transcript text must be horizontal and uploaded in order from least recent to most recent. It is the student’s sole responsibility to submit all required transcripts. GPS will NOT provide copies of transcripts (including foreign transcripts) to either departments or students.
  6. Two Letters of Reference: Referees must complete their assessments using the Google Form. Students are responsible for providing this link to their referees, and the documents necessary for them to write their respective letters. Selection process

  1. Each of the participating Alberta institutions has scholarship application and evaluation processes specific to their institutions for students in programs of full-time study. Please check with your institution’s faculty of graduate studies for information on evaluation.
  2. Students who have been awarded an Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship must complete annual and final reports through the term of their award and post-award reports after the end of the award.
  3. Multi-year scholarships are renewed annually after the first year upon satisfactory reporting by the student. Sponsoring Supervisor Each candidate must be sponsored by a faculty supervisor, possessing both a record of productive research within a research area described below and sufficient resources to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the research. Other Info Annual Reports (To University) Scholarships are annual and recipients may renew the scholarship, if eligible, up to the maximum term as indicated in the Program Guidelines and Handbook, provided acceptable progress report(s) are received. Details on progress reports and deadlines to renew a scholarship are university-specific. Students should contact their university for further information. Reports to Alberta Innovates A condition of accepting the scholarship is that scholarship recipients will be contacted and must respond to Alberta Innovate's reporting requests during and after the scholarship tenure. A scholarship report will be requested of and must be completed by each scholarship recipient. The scholarship recipient will be contacted during the last year of their scholarship tenure requesting submission of this report. This report will describe the outcome(s) of the funded research project, and both the recipient’s immediate and long-term plans. Alberta Innovates will specify the due date and the completed report should be completed within the student’s Alberta Innovates account. Report forms and further information on the requirements of this report will be provided by Alberta Innovates Conditions of Award
  4. The scholarship is subject to the terms and conditions described in the most current version of the Program Guidelines and Handbook, including any amendments to these documents.
  5. All scholarships are subject to the availability of funds.
  6. It is the responsibility of the scholarship recipient to stay apprised of the Program Guidelines and Handbook, as they may be updated from time to time.
  7. Students should also consult the rules and regulations governing graduate awards at their chosen university.
  8. During the tenure of the award, students are expected to make satisfactory academic progress to maintain their scholarship eligibility. Changes to Approved Awards Students must seek and receive approval in writing from the university prior to any significant changes to the research as outlined in the approved application. This includes but is not limited to, changes in supervisor, project, department, and program of study. Further, Alberta Innovates and Alberta Advanced Education require the university to be responsible for monitoring any changes to a recipient’s graduate registration that would affect eligibility for this scholarship, including termination of graduate studies, completion of degree requirements, leaves of absence, etc
