Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) recognizes academically outstanding students pursuing graduate studies at the University of Alberta (UAlberta). The scholarship applies to both master's and doctoral programs at UAlberta. It was established to incent the best and the brightest students, including international students, to study in Alberta. Eligibility

To be eligible, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: ​​​​​​​

  1. Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or a protected person within the meaning of subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada)), or an International student with a study permit.
  2. Open to course-based or thesis-based study programs.
  3. Open to masters or doctoral students. Students registered in a graduate certificate that can ladder into a Master's degree program are also eligible.
  4. Students must be living in Alberta while enrolled (taking classes remotely/online or in-person) at the institution.
  5. Students who are registered with Student Accessibility Services or have a documented need for accommodation, can apply if they are enrolled in at least 40% of a full course load.
  6. Must demonstrate academic excellence, as evidenced by one or more of the following: a. Current students have earned a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.3 or greater over the most recent 15 units of course weight in current program. b. Where there are less than 15 graded credits in the current program, the admission GPA (AGPA) is a weighted factor. c. For students newly admitted in Fall or Winter terms in which graded coursework is not yet available in the current program, the Admission GPA (AGPA) will be used.
  7. Research and/or academic contributions that may include published manuscripts, presentations, posters, exhibitions, community engagement, performances; and,
  8. Previous record of scholarly achievement through awards, scholarships, prizes, among others.
  9. transferred from a Master’s program to a Doctoral program, the number of months completed during the Master’s program will count towards the Doctoral Program.
  10. Qualifying students and students on academic probation are not eligible.

Award & availability

Stated amount: 741,529

  1. The value of the scholarship at University of Alberta is $12, 000 (INR 7, 41, 529) and paid out to recipient as one-time payment. Students must have a Canadian bank account and Alberta address updated in Bear Tracks to be eligible to receive the award.
  2. A student may only receive one Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship per year; these scholarships are NOT renewable. However, departments may nominate students for a new award in each year during which they meet the eligibility requirements. Scholarships are limited.

Application

No Separate Application or Fee is Required to get the grants, it will be automatically considered, once you enrolled for the program.

  1. Students must be nominated to GPS by their home department; students cannot apply online in the GSMS Awards Portal.
  2. Students applying for Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) must complete the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) Student Declaration form and submit it to their home department by their internal deadline.
  3. Students must consult with their department for their internal deadline and internal application process. Students must complete the AGES Student Declaration form to their respective departments within the internal department deadline. Other required documents are listed below:
  4. Recent Unofficial UofA transcript.
  5. Research Proposal (maximum 1 page).
  6. CV.

Selection process

  1. The GPS verifies the eligibility of department nominees and notifies winners directly.
  2. Departments determine the best way to select their AGES nominees. Departments are encouraged to set an earlier, internal departmental deadline to allow time for internal adjudication (if applicable).
  3. Each department is assigned a funding allocation by GPS and then selects nominees based on those allocations. The department then nominates students to GPS by submitting through the GSMS Awards Portal (refer to Departmental Memo for details and submission instructions). Departments are to use the 'GPA Guidelines - Awards' procedures available in eClass for calculating the GPA on the last 15 credits. Other Info Important Notes:
  4. Departments may nominate eligible international students up to the prescribed limits within the table; however, nomination of students on study permits is not mandatory and the allocation may be used for students with Canadian/Permanent Resident citizenship. Our contract from the Government of Alberta mandates how many awards may be offered to international students; therefore, we cannot exceed the limits outlined in the allocation table.
  5. Departments may use their allocations to nominate either masters or doctoral students as the award value is the same. Refer to FGSR’s website for complete eligibility requirements. Departments are to use the 'GPA Guidelines - Awards' procedures available in eClass for calculating the GPA on the last 15 credits.
  6. Allocations cannot be split; one allocation is equivalent to one $12, 000 (INR 7, 41, 529) scholarship and is paid to students in one lump sum via direct deposit only.
  7. A student may only receive one Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship per year. This scholarship is not renewable, but Departments may nominate students for a new award in each year during which they meet the eligibility requirements (refer to the Scholarships and Awards Manual for complete details).   8. Departments are given a quota of alternates that they are able to submit. Please refer to the allocation table to determine whether your department is eligible to submit alternates.
  9. Alternates must be domestic students only and must be submitted via GSMS Awards Portal no later than November
  10. Should additional AGES allocations be available, the FGSR will hold an adjudication in Winter term with the alternate candidates submitted by departments.
